UPSC Civil Services Result 2023: Kuhoo Garg, daughter of retired IPS officer Ashok Kumar, secured the 178th rank after she was forced to remain away from sporting action due to an injury.

UPSC Civil Services Result 2023: Kuhoo Garg, who was not long ago representing India in international badminton tournaments and competitions and making the country proud, has now cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination. The news was confirmed after the results were declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Tuesday (April 16). She will not be the first civil servant from her family with her father Ashok Kumar, retiring from the Indian Police Service (IPS) last year.

In an exclusive interaction with ABP Live, Ashok Kumar, an IPS officer of the 1989 batch, who served as the 11th Director General of Uttarakhand Police, revealed that it was actually an injury that forced Kuhoo to prepare for civil services.

2023 Was Kuhoo's Second UPSC Attempt

"She has been playing badminton since the age of 9 and started winning medals in the senior national level by the time she was 13. She sustained injury during the Uber Cup Trials and had to undergo a surgery in Mumbai. Upon realising that it may be a long injury layoff for upto an year, she began her UPSC journey. She gave first attempt in 2022, three months into preparation before ultimately clearing the exam in 2023." Kumar, a retired 1989 batch IPS officer, said.

"She used to practice for upto 10 hours a day and suddenly found herself nothing to do. That's when she decided to give it a try. I was there with her helping her in her preparations. She opted for online coaching," he added.

Kuhoo, bearing the roll number 1420215, secured the 178th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2023, becoming the first female sportsperson of international repute from India to crack the civil services examination. As far as her sporting career is concerned, her highest rank to date has been 34 in the mixed doubles category. When it comes to the highest rank in India, she was once the number 1 in the mixed doubles category, having won scores of medals in the junior and senior levels before an injury setback.
