Tokyo Paralympics: Vinod Kumar Creates New Asian Record, Wins Bronze In Discuss Throw Event
Vinod Kumar wins bronze Medal: Discus thrower Vinod Kumar, with his best throw of 19.91m in the Men's Discus Throw F52 final, won a bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday.
New Delhi: Discus thrower Vinod Kumar, with his best throw of 19.91m in the Men's Discus Throw F52 final, won a bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday and also managed to set a new Asian Record. Vinod Kumar, in all his six attempts, registered throws of 17.46m, 18.32m, 17.80m, 19.12m, 19.91m, and 19.81m. In the fifth try, he had managed to register his best attempt.
Poland's Piotr Kosewicz, with the best throw of 20.02m, won the gold medal. His second try was his best attempt while Croatia's Velimir Sandor (19.98m) secured the silver medal for his country.
Earlier, Indian athlete Nishad Kumar secured a second medal for India at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics 2020 by winning a silver medal in the men's high jump event. Nishad won the silver medal with a high jump of 2.06 meters. Along with a historic medal win, the Indian has also set a new Asian record. With a World Record jump of 2.15m, USA's Roderick Townsend secured the gold medal in the same event.
Dallas Wise, who finished on the same mark with Nishad, recorded a jump of 2.15m to share the second spot with him. However, Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise took two. India's Rampal Chahar finished at the fifth spot with a jump of 1.94m.
Earlier in the day, Bhavina Patel opened India's medal tally account in Paralympics 2020 by winning the silver medal in Table Tennis. She suffered a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Chinese player Ying Zhou in the final.
Bhavina lost the final 7-11, 5-11, 6-11. She became the first ever Indian table tennis player to win a medal at the Paralympics and the second female athlete after PCI chief Deepa Malik to achieve this feat. Deepa had won silver at Rio 2016 in women's shot put.
