Aaron Finch Hints At Several Aussie Players Retiring After T20 World Cup 2022

Australia will be eyeing lifting the T20 World Cup 2022 title once again when they play in front of their home crowd later this year.

New Delhi: Australian cricket team is set to host the T20 World Cup in October-November. Australia's limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch has said that this year's T20 World Cup could be the last tournament for many senior players in the Australian team and he might be one of them. Australia will be defending the T20 World Cup title on home soil, which the team had won by defeating New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Finch & Co. will be eyeing lifting the World Cup trophy once again when they play in front of their home crowd later this year.

“It might be a full stop on everything (several players retiring from T20Is, including him) if it goes to plan like that. Fairy tales can happen in sports. I think, just naturally, when guys get to their mid-30s, it’s going to be that way. Davey (Warner) just keeps going; he could play for another 10 years, I think, with how fit he is and how much he loves the competition and continuing to challenge himself,” Finch told cricket.com.au.

Finch also said that the nature of the tournament and the competition would make it difficult to defend the title against too many strong teams. He cited the example of South Africa from last year's tournament which failed to qualify for the knockouts even after winning four of their five matches.

The Australian captain said, "It is going to be an incredibly difficult tournament. We saw South Africa win four out of their five matches in the last World Cup and still didn't qualify because of the net run rate. It's so complicated that you even need a little luck."
