Paris Olympics 2024: WFI Considering Legal Action Against IOC, United World Wrestling Following Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification

Paris Olympics 2024: WFI is considering legal action against United World Wrestling (UWW) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) following Vinesh Phogat's disqualification.

India's dream of winning its first-ever gold medal in women's wrestling at the Games was shattered on Wednesday morning when grappler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg category final (Gold medal) match.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) released an official statement declaring that Phogat was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit, leading to her disqualification. The news sent shockwaves across the nation, breaking the hearts and hopes of billions of fans.

Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) official statement: "It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand."

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh's statement on Vinesh Phogat's disqualification

Sanjay Singh told ANI that WFI is considering legal action against United World Wrestling (UWW) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) following Vinesh Phogat's disqualification.

"It is extremely unfortunate for our country that even after wrestling so well and qualifying for the finals, she was disqualified for being overweight by 100 grams," he stated.

"Her weight was constant for two days but increased overnight. The reason for this can only be given by her nutritionist and her coach," he added.

Not just gold, Vinesh Phogat now even misses out on securing even the silver medal. Despite maintaining an unbeaten streak throughout the competition, she will finish in last place due to her weigh-in failure, as none of her previous victories will be recognized.
