Paris Olympics 2024: The 'Infamous' South Korea Opening Ceremony Controversy — Here's All You Need To Know

South Korea Opening Ceremony Controversy: South Korea were wrongly announced as 'North Korea' by the organisers and that has sparked a big controversy now. Here are the details.

South Korea Opening Ceremony Controversy: The Paris Olympics 2024's Opening Ceremony was already suffering with a controversial build-up, as several threatening factors were jumping in at once to disrupt the ceremony on July 26. One such incident took place during the ceremony, as the announcer addressed South Korea as 'North Korea' during the boat ceremony.

This incident occurred when the announcer addressed the boat, which was sailing in the river Seine carrying South Korean athletes, as Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, who are the fiercest rivals of the country. The South Korean faithful were pretty upset with the incident and fuel to the fire was added on later as well, when the announcer correctly addressed North Korea as Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The International Olympic Committee have now officially apologised for the mistake via a press conference.

"An error occurred in our broadcast when introducing the team of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the Republic of Korea during the Opening Ceremony, we apologise sincerely," said International Olympic Committee (IOC) Media via a post on their official 'X' account.

South Korea’s National Olympic Committee Demands Neccessary Actions From IOC President In The Aftermath Of The Controversial Announcement

The South Korea’s National Olympic Committee have swiftly acted upon the situation, and their vice minister for sports and culture, Jang Mi-ran, has reportedly requested a meeting with Thomas Bach (IOC President) to make sure that this controversy does not spark again, and that the country should be addressed correctly.

South Korea is amongst the contenders for featuring in the Top 5 list for the gold medal tallies at the Games, and have sent 143 athletes to take part in their designated 21 events.
