Manu Bhaker Wins Bronze: PM Modi, CM Saini Laud Manu Bhaker For Historic Bronze In 10m Air Pistol Shooting

A resilient Manu Bhaker ended India's 12-year wait for a shooting medal in Olympics by becoming the first markswoman from the country to finish on the podium with a bronze in the 10m air pistol event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday congratulated Manu Bhaker for winning India's first medal at the Paris Olympics. 

Manu Bhaker clinched a bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol final in the French capital on Sunday. She became the first Indian woman to win a shooting medal at the Olympic Games, ending a 12-year wait for a medal in shooting. 

Calling it a 'historic medal', Prime Minister Modi said, "Well done, @realmanubhaker, for winning India’s FIRST medal at Paris Olympics2024! Congrats for the Bronze. This success is even more special as she becomes the 1st woman to win a medal in shooting for India."

Responding to the tweet, Bhaker said, "Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi ji for your blessings. I would like to thank government for all the support and encouragement. It means a lot."

President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated the Olympic winner by saying that India is proud of her.

"Heartiest congratulations to Manu Bhaker for opening India’s medal tally with her bronze medal in the 10 metre air pistol shooting event at the Paris Olympics. She is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in a shooting competition. India is proud of Manu Bhaker. Her feat is going to inspire many sportspersons, especially women. I wish she scales greater heights of accomplishment in the future," Murmu said.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, "A proud moment, @realmanubhaker wins Bharat's first medal, a BRONZE in Women’s 10m Air Pistol at Paris Olympic 2024Congratulations Manu, you have displayed your skill & dedication, you have become 1st woman shooter to win an Olympic medal for Bharat!"

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he was proud to see India clinch the first medal in Olympics and added that the daughters have given a wonderful start to the country in the game. 

"Proud to see India clinch its first medal in the Paris #OlympicGames 2024! Congratulations to @realmanubhaker for the Bronze - first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal. Our daughters have given us a wonderful start. Many more to come," the leader of the opposition said. 

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also congratulated Bhaker for winning the bronze medal. The Haryana CM said that "finally the dream that the whole country had from Haryana's daughter came true."

IOC Member Nita Ambani said Bhaker's success will inspire young athletes across India to dream big. 

"What an incredible moment! Our youngest woman shooter has opened India’s tally at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a bronze. Congratulations, Manu Bhaker! As the first Indian woman to win in the 10 m air pistol at the Olympics and our youngest Indian shooter to do so, you’ve made history. I’m sure your success today will inspire young athletes across India to dream big and give it their all. Keep the Indian flag flying high. Go India Go make us all proud!" Nita Ambani said.

Reacting to Manu Bhaker's success, her mother said, "I always wanted my daughter to be happy. I have always been feeling good."

Manu Bhaker's grandmother meanwhile said she would prepare a special food for her. The last time India won a medal in shooting at the Olympics was in London in 2012 when rapid-fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar won silver and 10m air rifle marksman Gagan Narang won bronze.
