Neymar, Willian star as Brazil advance to quarterfinal with 2-0 win over Mexico

The five-time champions scored twice in the second half, taking their game to the next level, giving Mexico no chance whatsoever to make a comeback in the match.

Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of FIFA World Cup 2018 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Mexico on Monday, much to the delight of millions of their fans, who got skeptic after a series of upsets saw the exit of Argentina, Portugal and Spain from their respective round of 16 matches.

The five-time champions scored twice in the second half, taking their game to the next level, giving Mexico no chance whatsoever to make a comeback in the match.

Neymar left his mark on the match by scoring his second goal of World Cup 2018 from a Willian cross in 52nd minute of the match that put Brazil ahead. That was Neymar’s 51st goal for Brazil. This goal also took Brazil's tally of World Cup goals to 227 - the highest by any team, bettering Germany's record of 226 goals.

After the deadlock got broken, there was no looking back for Brazil. A series of attack, initiated from the right side by Willian, who had his best game of the World Cup rattled Mexico. With a little bit of luck, Brazil could have easily got ahead by 3-0.

However, justice was done Firmino, who scored right at the stroke of regulation time from a Neymar assist to put the nail in the coffin.

Mexico, on the other hand, bowed out from the World Cup round of sixteens for the eighth time in a row.
