New Delhi: On the auspicious occasion of National Sports Day, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to share a heart-warming video in which he can be seen playing with 'Divyang' kids. Every year, on 29th August, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, is celebrated as National Sports Day.
"Sport brings hope and joy even in the most challenging circumstances. This #NationalSportsDay, make playing a habit. Keep ourselves and those around us happy," Tendulkar tweeted.
Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905 in a Rajput family of Allahabad. He had given India recognition at the international level in hockey. Major Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1965. In the year 1928 in Amsterdam, 1932 in Los Angeles and in 1936 Berlin Olympics, he won the gold medal in hockey for India.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will be renamed as 'Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award', respecting the sentiments of citizens across the nation.
The announcement was made after India's men's hockey team won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. It was India's first medal win in hockey at Olympics since the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
The Khel Ratna award - country's highest Sports honour - was given for the first time in 1991-92.
