Mumbai Indians' Unwanted IPL Record Continues After Defeat To CSK
CSK defeated MI by four wickets in their IPL 2025 opener, as Mumbai continued their streak of an unwanted record in season openers.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets in both teams’ first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2025 on March 23 (Sunday) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK joined Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as the winners in their respective season-openers in the tournament. With the defeat, MI extended their unwanted IPL record.
Notably, Mumbai Indians, who are the joint-most successful franchise in the IPL history along with CSK with five titles to their names, have not been able to win their first IPL game in 13 years. The last time they won their IPL campaign opener was back in 2012. Their last campaign-opener win, interestingly, came against CSK in IPL 2012.

Coming to the CSK vs MI match, Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to bowl first against Suryakumar Yadav’s Mumbai Indians.
MI batters struggled on a spin-friendly Chepauk pitch, crumbling to 153/9 after being rattled by Noor Ahmad’s brilliant 4/18. Early blows in the powerplay saw Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks fall quickly. A 51-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma offered some respite, but Noor's double blow in one over derailed the innings. A late cameo from Deepak Chahar helped MI post a fighting total, giving their bowlers something to defend.
CSK made light work of the chase with Ruturaj Gaikwad’s fiery fifty setting the tone and Rachin Ravindra anchoring the innings till the end. After losing Tripathi early, CSK raced to 74/1 in 7 overs, with Ruturaj smashing a quick 50. Rachin took over after the skipper’s departure, finishing unbeaten. Debutant Vignesh Puthur impressed with 3 wickets, but the target was never out of reach for the hosts.
