Indian Women's Tennis Team Very Close For Their First Fed Cup World Group Play Off Spot
After 3 matches, the Indian women are now sitting at number 2 behind China in the table and are ahead of both South Korea and Indonesia.
New Delhi: Indian Women's Tennis team registered their third victory in a row and this time defeated Chinese Taipei to reach very close of a maiden Federation Cup play-off spot. This time the Indian women defeated Chinese Taipei at the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group I which is going on in Dubai.
Top two teams will qualify for the the play off spots scheduled to be held in the third week of April. India needs to beat Indonesia now in their last group league match. After 3 matches, the Indian women are now sitting at number 2 behind China in the table and are ahead of both South Korea and Indonesia.
In the tie against Chinese Taipei Ankita Raina didn't have the brightest of starts and lost her first singles match against the top ranked Chinese Taipei opponent. Rutuja Bhosale won her third consecutive match in the tournament to help India make a fight back. Finally Sania Mirza paired up with Ankita Raina to give India the decisive win which ensured the 2-1 victory.
After the initial loss against China in the ongoing Federation Cup Tennis, India have registered three consecutive wins in a row. In the past the Indian women have never entered the play off stages of the biggest team event in the World of Tennis.
This time the chances are looking bright as the last hurdle is Indonesia. With experienced Sania Mirza is there to play the doubles match, India has to ensure at least one victory in the singles in order to qualify for the play off stages.
Indian women's team are at the touching distance to create history, whereas the Men's team will face an uphill task to qualify for the World Group in Zagreb. On Day 1 of the tie against mighty Croatia, the Men's team are trailing 0-2 and facing a situation where they need to win all three matches in order to make it to the elite 16 teams in the world.
