WATCH: Iyer, Pant Break Sachin Tendulkar-Ajay Jadeja’s 20-YO Record
They surpassed the previous record, held by Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999
After showcasing their on-field camaraderie in Chepauk, the duo of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh pant went berserk on West Indies attack in the 2nd ODI in Vishakhapatnam on Wednesday. They not only provided the much-needed push to India’s mammoth score in the death overs but also broke India’s record of most runs scored in a single over in ODIs.
They set the milestone in the 47th over bowled by Roston Chase which turned out to be the most expensive over of the entire innings. Iyer slammed four sixes and a boundary whereas Pant scored just a single to amass 31 runs off six deliveries.
They surpassed the previous record, held by Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja who scored 28 runs in an over against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999.
Chase’s this over was seventh-most expensive over in the history of ODI cricket. The highest belongs to the one in which former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes against the Netherlands in ICC World Cup 2003.
Earlier in the 46th over, Pant hit Sheldon Cottrell for 24 runs in an over including three fours and two sixes. The wicketkeeper-batsman added 73 runs for the fourth wicket off just 24 deliveries.
