Virender Sehwag Recalls Dining With Sachin Tendulkar In Australia, Says 'He Made Me Eat Uncooked Rice'

Virender Sehwag recalled an incident when his teammate Sachin Tendulkar took him to a Japanese restaurant and made him try Sushi for the first time in Australia.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag recalled an unusual experience when his teammate, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, took him out for dinner during India's tour of Australia in 2003-2004. Sehwag claimed that Sachin took him to a Japanese restaurant and made him try Sushi for the first time. In a recent interaction with popular TV host Gaurav Kapur on Breakfast With Champions, Sehwag said," He (Sachin Tendulkar) took me out when we were in Australia in 2003-04 and he said we'll have Sushi. I said, 'What is this Sushi?'. He told me we were going to a Japanese restaurant. I wondered what the food would be. He said everything would be there. I was expecting dal, roti, and all."

Sehwag further said he ordered burgers and sandwiches after returning the hotel. "He held his head and told me to move on and try different food items. That is when I got to know of Sushi. I was like, 'He has made me eat uncooked rice. We came back, and then, I ordered sandwiches and burgers at the hotel," he added.

Sehwag concluded by saying, "Both my mother and wife are vegetarians. I've had vegetarian food at home since childhood. My father would order chicken from outside and have it every day. We never got to eat it. We didn't have the courage to ask for a piece. I got to have chicken when I was 17-18 years old when I went out of town to play cricket."

For many years, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar formed the most prolific batting partnerships, especially in One-Day-Internationals. While 'aggressor' Sehwag played fearless cricket and risky but rewarding strokes, Tendulkar batted with calm and composure to anchor the team's innings. The duo scored 3919 runs together in 93 innings while opening for India in ODIs, with a remarkable average of 42.13 runs.
