Fact Check: Viral Video Of Australian Coach Justin Langer Kicking A Dustbin Actually An Old One
Video of an upset Justin Langer, the Australian coach goes viral. He's seen kicking a dustbin in the video. Turns out, it is an old video which was taken during the 2019 Ashes series.
India defeated Australia in the final test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and won the series 2-1 in a dramatic manner.
Tim Paine and co looked visibly unhappy after the game as Australia was very much in the game up until the last 10 overs of the game. But recently, a video is being shared on Twitter and other social media. It was said that the video was taken after the match ended in Brisbane.
In the video, Australia’s coach Justin Langer is seen kicking a dustbin in frustration in, what looks like, a dressing-room gallery.
First, take a look at the video:

The above video is NOT taken after the Gabba Test. It is clear from the fact that the jersey worn by Langer in the video is different from the jersey he wore at the game on Tuesday. You can see the difference of clothing in the following interview video from Gabba on Tuesday:

So when was the viral video taken?
Justin Langer’s viral video is actually from The Ashes Test series in August 2019. It was taken during the dying moments of the Headingly Test match on 26 August 2019. It was yet another classic Ashes Test filled with late drama.
The video was taken when England were at 360-9 in the last innings while chasing 362. Actually, Ben Stokes had reverse-swept Nathan Lyon towards the Point region. Non-striker Jack Leech had almost come half-way down the pitch to take a single, but was denied by Stokes. It looked like Australia would run away with a win with an obvious run-out. But Nathon Lyon could not gather the ball properly and missed a pretty straight-forward run out chance giving England a huge life-line in the game. England went on to win in the very next over.
A coach’s reaction to such an easy run-out chance is understandable. Langer also confirmed the incident during an interview with The Grade Cricketer Podcast. He said in the interview, ‘I don’t remember what I did next! Nathan Lyon bloody missed the ball – easiest thing in the world – and I kicked the bin, what do you mean what happened next!? We bloody lost the Test match, that’s what happened next.’
It is very easy to fall prey to misinformation on social media. Seems like circulation of old videos packaged as new is the ongoing trend!
