According to The Times of India, the Indian team management is exploring a transition in both ODI and Test captaincy after the Champions Trophy. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir have reportedly discussed this plan with Rohit following the Australia tour. The board is looking ahead to long-term leadership options beyond Rohit.

Rohit's stance on the transition

Rohit Sharma is believed to have agreed to this roadmap with Indian cricket's future in mind. This is also one of the reasons why the BCCI has delayed announcing the central contracts, which are expected to be finalized only after the Champions Trophy final.

A senior BCCI official told The Times of India that while Rohit still feels he has some cricket left in him, he acknowledges the need for stability in leadership ahead of the next World Cup. The decision regarding his retirement remains in his hands, but the board will separately address the captaincy issue. Notably, former India skipper Virat Kohli has also been consulted as part of this transition plan.
