India's ODI Toss Drought Continues! 14 Consecutive Losses Since 2023 World Cup Final
IND Vs AUS: In the Champions Trophy first semifinal, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma lost the toss to Australian captain Steve Smith.

IND Vs AUS Champions Trophy Semifinals: India has lost 14 consecutive tosses in one-day internationals (ODIs), the longest streak on record. The run began at the Cricket World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad. With Australia captain Steve Smith winning the toss in today's Champions Trophy semifinal, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma is now registering 11 consecutive toss losses.
Captains’ Toss Loss Records
India’s Rohit Sharma's record of 11 toss losses between November 2023 and March 2025 places him alongside the Netherlands’ Peter Borren, who also lost 11 consecutive tosses between March 2011 and August 2013. Meanwhile, West Indies’ Brian Lara holds the record with 12 toss losses from October 1998 to May 1999.
The Toss: A Game Of Chance
Randomness at Play: The coin toss, by its very nature, has a 50/50 chance. Statistically, even a random event can sometimes produce streaks that appear significant. India's current run of 14 lost tosses is an extreme example of such variance. While it might feel like more than mere chance, there is no inherent bias in the coin toss mechanism itself.
Strategic Implications: Winning the toss offers a team the choice to either bat or bowl first—a decision that can be crucial under certain conditions. Captains often analyze pitch conditions, weather, and match context before making their choice. However, losing the toss forces teams into reactive strategies, potentially putting them at a disadvantage right from the start.
IND Vs AUS Champions Trophy Semifinals Team Changes
India retained the same playing XI as in their previous match against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy. Australia made two changes from its previous XI. Cooper Connolly replaces the injured Matthews Short, while Tanveer Sangha comes in for Spencer Johnson.
