ICC Chairman Election: Ball In Jay Shah's Court After Greg Barclay Confirms He Will Step Down After Current Term
It is not yet clear whether Jay Shah will continue at BCCI or move to ICC.
Greg Barclay, the current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has opted out of a third term after the end of his ongoint stint with the world cricket governing body on November 30. That leaves the posssibility of Jay Shah becoming the next ICC chairman open but it remains to be seen if the current secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) throw his hat in the ring for the post, which will be confirmed by August 27.
Notably, an ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years and this is Barclays' second two-year term.
"ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022," an official relase by the ICC quoted him as saying.

The ICC rules states that the chairman's election usually has 16 votes. To decide the winner, a majority of nine votes (51%) is needed. Earlier, the requirement for the incumbent to remain chairman was two-third majority.
"Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024."
Jay Shah Could Be Youngest ICC Chairman In History
Notably, Shah is considered is already one of the most influential faces in the ICC Board room. He heads the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee. As of now, Shah has another year left as the BCCI secretary before he will have to go on for a mandatory cooling off period.
If, however, Shah decides to move to the ICC, he will have four years left in the BCCI with a person allowed to be in office for a cumulative period of 18 tears- nine in the state association and nine in the apex crikcet governing body of India. At 35, he will be in with a chance to be the youngest chairman in ICC history.

Only Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar from India who have been the ICC chairman.
