Champions Trophy 2025: Not Shubman Gill! Surprise Contender For India's Vice-Captaincy In CT 2025
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament is expected to feature a major leadership change.
India vice-captain Champions Trophy 2025: With India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Test series wrapped up, Team India has shifted its focus to ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The marquee ICC tournament is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9 but all of India's matches will be played in Dubai.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament is expected to feature a major leadership change, with selectors likely to name Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain, replacing Shubman Gill, who held the role in white-ball formats since 2024, Times of India reported. Rohit Sharma remains confirmed as the captain for the marquee event.

Jasprit Bumrah's rise in leadership responsibilities is backed by his impressive track record. A key figure in India's leadership group since 2022, he has captained the team in both ODIs and T20Is, making his T20 captaincy debut against Ireland in 2023. In Tests, he led India to a historic win in Perth during IND vs AUS Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Bumrah's appointment as vice-captain for Champions Trophy 2025 marks a shift away from Gill, who was named vice-captain after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya, who served as deputy during the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, is also no longer in contention for the vice-captaincy role in any format.
Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India will play ODI and T20 series against England to fine-tune their preparations. Bumrah is expected to be rested for the series against England to ensure his fitness for Champions Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce squads for India vs England ODI and T20I series and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 pretty soon.
