Melbourne Stars Vs Hobart Hurricanes Match Report
Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes were officially eliminated even before they played each other on Monday, January 15. Both the sides were playing a dead rubber and had all freedom to play extravagant cricket irrespective of the result.
Electing to bowl first, Melbourne Stars were playing their last fixture of Big Bash League 2023-24 at their home, Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. Things didn't go as planned for the Stars as Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott both made a tremendous start to their respective innings as they led the Hurricanes to 86 runs inside first 10 overs.
However, the huge partnership saw its end when Nathan Coulter-Nile got rid of the half-centurion Ben McDermott at 86. However, things didn't change much Hurricanes maintained their onslaught for the next 5 ovrs and took full advantage of the Power Surge.
The Stars managed to make a mini comeback of their own as the reduced Hurricanes from 132/2 in 14.2 overs to 171/7 in 19.1 overs but the slog hitting from Nathan Ellis saw them breach the 180-run mark and end their innings at 187/8 after 20 overs.
In return, the Melbourne Stars made a dismal start to their proceedings as they lost Thomas Rogers and Daniel Lawrence and saw themselves reeling at 31/2 in 3.4 overs. A swashbuckling Glenn Maxwell and an ever-consistent Beau Webster saw the sinking ship of Stars to restore stability as both scored vital runs alongside Marcus Stoinis.
All of their efforts went in vain as Hurricanes prevailed by defeating Stars by 7 runs.
