Ashes 2021-22: England Fined Entire Match Fee For Slow Over Rate In 1st Test Vs Australia

Match referee David Boon has fined England 100% of their match fee for bowling 5 overs short of over-rate speed targets.

New Delhi: The ICC, on Saturday, delivered a big blow to England after they lost the first Test of the five-match Ashes Test series. Joe Root-led England have been fined 100% of their match fee for slow over rate in the Brisbane Test against Australia. With this, their 5 points of the World Test Championship have also been deducted. England are now at number six in the ICC WTC Points Table with 9 points.

Sri Lanka are on the top in the points table of the World Test Championship with two wins, while Australia, today, won the first Test against England to finish second. Pakistan is at number three, India at number four and West Indies at number five.

"In accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the Terms of Play of the ICC World Test Championship, a point is deducted for any team having reduced an over," an ICC media release said.

Match referee David Boon has fined England 100% of their match fee for bowling 5 overs short of over-rate speed targets. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, 20% of the match fee is deducted for reducing an over in the stipulated time.

Australia's star batter Travis Head, who won the man of the match in the first Test, has also been fined 15 percent of his match fee for using inappropriate language. The incident happened in the 77th over of Australia's first innings, when he used inappropriate language for Stokes.

Aussie beat England in Brisbane Test to take 1-0 lead

Australia made an impressive start to the Ashes series with a 9-wicket win in Brisbane. England were bowled out for 147 in the first innings. After this, the hosts scored 425 runs in the first innings.

England's second innings: On the fourth day, England's innings was reduced to 297 runs, after which Australia needed only 20 runs to win, which they achieved after losing one wicket.
