Sawan 2025 — Devotees Advised Not To Offer These Items With Gangajal On Shivling

Avoid these items while offering Gangajal to Lord Shiva during Sawan. Know which offerings are considered inauspicious and may prevent blessings during this holy month.

Sawan 2025: The holy month of Sawan has commenced, marking a spiritually significant time for the worship of Lord Shiva. This sacred period is especially auspicious for devotees who engage in Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek rituals by offering water on the Shivling and observing fasts to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.

Offering Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) on the Shivling is considered highly meritorious during Sawan, as the Ganga is believed to have originated from Lord Shiva’s matted locks. However, it is important to note that certain items are prohibited from being offered along with Gangajal, as doing so may displease Lord Shiva.

Items That Should Not Be Offered With Gangajal On Shivling:

Tulsi Leaves:
Devotees are strictly advised against offering Tulsi (holy basil) leaves on the Shivling with Gangajal. According to Hindu scriptures, Tulsi is considered sacred to Lord Vishnu and not meant for Shiva’s worship. Combining Tulsi with Gangajal during offering is believed to hinder divine blessings.

Kumkum and Sindoor:
Offering kumkum (vermilion) and sindoor (red sacred powder) along with Gangajal on the Shivling is also forbidden. These substances symbolize marital bliss and are associated with feminine energy, while the Shivling represents the masculine principle. Hence, their use in Shiva’s worship is considered inauspicious during Sawan.

Raw Rice (Akshat):
Uncooked rice grains, known as akshat, should not be offered on the Shivling. Although widely used in worship rituals, they are not considered suitable for Lord Shiva’s offerings, as they can compromise the purity of the ritual.

Offering Gangajal Using a Conch Shell (Shankh):
Using a shankh (conch shell) to pour Gangajal on the Shivling is considered inappropriate. Scriptures state that the conch originates from the ocean, and since Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison (halahal) that emerged during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), offering Gangajal from a conch is viewed as inauspicious.
