Know The Significance Of Worshipping Sacred Trees On Nirjala Ekadashi

Offering water and worshipping these trees is considered a vital part of the rituals of Nirjala Ekadashi.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: The month of Jyeshtha is known for its scorching heat, making water an even more vital element during this time. Many Hindu festivals observed in this month are associated with water, and one such important occasion is Nirjala Ekadashi. To understand the true value of water, devotees observe a strict fast on this day—abstaining from both food and water.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Ekadashi holds immense spiritual importance, but Nirjala Ekadashi observed during the Jyeshtha month places special emphasis on worshipping certain sacred trees. Offering water to these trees is considered a vital part of the rituals. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi is being observed today on June 6, 2025.

Trees To Worship On Nirjala Ekadashi:

Why Worship the Peepal Tree:
On Nirjala Ekadashi, it is a traditional practice to worship the Peepal tree. It is believed that the tree houses the holy trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). Offering prayers and water to the Peepal tree on this day is said to please not only the deities but also one's ancestors. It is especially auspicious to pour a mixture of water, milk, and black sesame seeds at the base of the tree in the early morning, as Goddess Lakshmi is believed to visit the Peepal tree during that time.

Benefits of Offering Water to the Amla Tree:
Watering the Amla (Indian gooseberry) tree on Nirjala Ekadashi is also considered highly beneficial. Devotees should offer raw milk, rice grains (akshat), vermillion (roli), and other sacred items to its roots after pouring water. It is believed that such offerings bring harmony in marital life and foster love in relationships.

What Not to Do: Tulsi Plant Rituals

Unlike other trees, water is not offered to the Tulsi (holy basil) plant on Nirjala Ekadashi. Instead, devotees must light a lamp (diya) near the Tulsi and chant Vishnu mantras. Performing 11 circumambulations (parikrama) of the Tulsi plant during the puja is also a vital part of the observance.
