Mauni Amavasya 2025: Why Is It So Special? Know The Puja Rituals, Spiritual Benefits, And All About This Day

January 29, 2025, marks the year's first Amavasya, known as Mauni Amavasya. This day is considered auspicious for various activities due to its significant religious importance.

Mauni Amavasya 2025: Mauni Amavasya, observed on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Magha month, holds great spiritual and religious importance in Hindu tradition. It is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma created Swayambhuva Manu and initiated the creation of the universe, giving the day its name, Mauni Amavasya. Observing silence, performing rituals at pilgrimage sites, and undertaking charity are believed to grant everlasting virtues.

Practicing silence (maun sadhana) on this day not only helps control the mind but is also said to enhance speech power. For those who find it challenging to remain silent all day, even a 1.25-hour vow of silence can instill newfound energy. Mentally chanting prayers while observing silence multiplies its benefits. For people dealing with fear, anxiety, or mental instability, meditating on Mauni Amavasya can bring peace of mind and improve overall health. This day is also considered an excellent time for introspection, gaining knowledge, and inviting positive energy into one’s life.

Rituals To Perform On Mauni Amavasya:

As per the Padma Purana, the deity of Amavasya is Pitru (ancestors). Offering tarpan (a ritual to honoUr ancestors) with sesame seeds and water before sunrise grants peace to ancestors and fulfills personal desires. Donating grains and clothes pleases Goddess Lakshmi. Fasting and worship are particularly effective for alleviating Pitru Dosh and Kaal Sarp Dosh.

This year, several auspicious yogas align with Mauni Amavasya, enhancing its significance. The Sun and Moon will be in Capricorn, while Jupiter will reside in Taurus. Additionally, in 2025, the Mauni Amavasya coincides with the third Amrit Snan (Royal Bath) of the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. This bath, commencing during the Brahma Muhurat, holds immense importance and is believed to bestow blessings akin to immortality.
