How To Observe Shivratri Vrat
- On the day before Shivratri, i.e., on the Trayodashi Tithi, devotees should consume food only once. The purpose of this is to ensure that no undigested food remains in the digestive system on the fasting day.
- On the day of Shivratri, after completing daily rituals in the morning, devotees should take a vow to observe a fruit-based or complete fast for the entire day. During the fast, they should refrain from all types of food.
- It is advised to add black sesame seeds to the bathing water on this day. It is believed that the sacred bath on Shivratri purifies not only the body but also the soul. If possible, one should take a dip in the Ganga.
- During Pradosh Kaal, Nishita Kaal, or all four night phases, one should create a clay Shivling at home and perform Abhishek with water and Panchamrit as part of the worship ritual.
- Use milk, rose water, sandalwood paste, curd, honey, ghee, sugar, bel leaves, madar flowers, sacred ash, bhang, gulal, and water for the worship rituals.
- During the worship, one should chant the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" continuously.
- The ideal time to conclude the fast is after the Chaturdashi Tithi ends.
