Diwali 2024: Why Goddess Laxmi And Lord Ganesh Are Worshipped Together? Know The Story Behind It

While Goddess Laxmi is the deity of wealth, Lord Ganesh symbolises wisdom and intellect. With Laxmi’s blessings, one may attain wealth, but without wisdom, managing it becomes challenging.

Diwali 2024: Diwali, or Deepavali is a festival of five days, beginning with Dhanteras, on which the worship of Goddess Laxmi is also observed. This period includes festivals like Naraka Chaturdashi, Laxmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj, culminating on Diwali, which is celebrated on Kartik Amavasya. This year, Diwali will be observed on October 31, 2024.

On Diwali night, people perform the Laxmi-Ganesh Puja at homes, offices, shops, and workplaces during the Pradosh Kaal. Usually, Goddess Laxmi is worshiped alongside Lord Vishnu, but on Diwali, she is worshiped exclusively with Lord Ganesh.

When Lord Vishnu Breaks Goddess Laxmi's Pride:

According to legend, a discussion took place between Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi in Vaikuntha, the celestial abode. During this conversation, Laxmi expressed pride, saying, 'I grant wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance. My blessings provide every kind of happiness to devotees, making my worship supreme.'

Sensing her pride, Lord Vishnu decided to humble her. He remarked, 'You are indeed supreme, yet your womanhood is incomplete, as true womanhood is considered fulfilled only with the joy of motherhood.'

How Lord Ganesh Became Goddess Laxmi’s Adopted Son:

Hearing this, Goddess Laxmi was saddened and shared her feelings with Goddess Parvati. In response, Parvati gifted her son, Lord Ganesh, to Laxmi as her adopted son, bringing great happiness to the goddess. Goddess Laxmi then declared that devotees would attain wealth, success, and prosperity only by worshiping both Laxmi and Ganesh together. Since then, on Diwali, Lord Ganesh is worshiped as Laxmi’s adopted son.

Why Laxmi-Ganesh Worship Is Essential On Diwali:

In scriptures, Goddess Laxmi is revered as the deity of wealth and grandeur, while Lord Ganesh is considered the god of wisdom and intellect. Though Laxmi’s blessings grant wealth, it can only be managed wisely with intellect. Worshiping Laxmi and Ganesh together on Diwali ensures that one receives both wealth and the wisdom to use it thoughtfully, avoiding material excess and securing prosperity with mindfulness.
