Sri Lanka’s Parliament is set to convene on Wednesday for the first session under new President Ranil Wickremesinghe and will approve the state of emergency imposed over a week ago to end social unrest, an official announcement said on Tuesday. Wickremesinghe announced the state of emergency on July 17 after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka to escape a popular uprising against his government's economic mismanagement.
Taliban has appealed to minorities including Hindus and Sikhs to return to the country claiming that the security situation in Afghanistan has been solved. The claim comes amid Director General of the Office of the Minister of State of the Taliban, Dr Mullah Abdul Wasi meeting with a number of members of the Hindu and Sikh Council on July 24, according to the post by the Office of Chief of Staff, Afghanistan on Twitter, reported news aegncy ANI.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is regularly reviewing available data with its laboratory and other expert groups after Monkeypox cases are being reported from multiple countries, said Dr. PK Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia Region on Monday. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current monkeypox epidemic a global health emergency on July 23. "The transmission of monkeypox appears to be occurring primarily through close physical contact, including sexual contact. Transmission can also occur from contaminated materials such as linens, bedding, electronics, clothing, that have infectious skin particles," she said.
EU energy ministers approved a draft European law meant to lower demand for gas by 15% from August through March. The new legislation entails voluntary national steps to reduce gas consumption and, if they yield insufficient savings, a trigger for mandatory moves in the 27-member bloc.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the move, saying that the “the EU has taken a decisive step to face down the threat of a full gas disruption by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

A day after Lok Sabha suspended four Congress members for trying to disrupt the House, it was Rajya Sabha's turn on Tuesday. As many as 19 Opposition members belonging to various parties including Trinamool Congress, TRS, CPI, CPI(M), and DMK were suspended for the week. The House witnessed repeated adjournments as the suspended members refused to leave the House and continued to chant slogans. Rajya Sabha witnessed several adjournments as Opposition MPs were demanding an urgent
discussion under Rule 267 on price rise and GST hike. When the House reassembled at 2 pm, several opposition members stormed the well reiterating their demand.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was detained by police at Vijay Chowk on Tuesday after they staged a protest against the ED questioning Sonia Gandhi. The Enforcement Directorate has been questioning Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for the second time in a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper, prompting her party to stage protests against the alleged misuse of central agencies. Rahul Gandhi has already appeared before the probe agency for questioning in the same case. Rahul Gandhi and the other Congress MPs had gathered at Vijay Chowk to march towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan to draw the President's attention to the alleged misuse of agencies by the government, but were stopped and put in a police bus. The officials did not disclose where he was being taken.
Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) president Shivpal Singh Yadav on Tuesday said Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's letter telling him that he is "free to go where ever he gets more respect" showed his "political immaturity" and proves what led to the SP's defeat in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Born and raised in Pune, the now Mumbai-based Aditi Vinayak Dravid was recently awarded the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival for her performance in the bilingual (Hindi-English) feature film Ijaad. In the one-character film, Asmi (played by Dravid) has had an impactful incident in her childhood which is disturbing her present.
But she finally decides to face it, go through the process and emerge victorious. The film, produced by Muktaayan Arts and Entertainment LLP, is directed by Piyush Kulkarni.
Several television celebrities paid their last respects to actor Deepesh Bhan at a prayer meet on Monday. Bhan’s Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain co-stars also attended the prayer meet. The actor, known for playing as Malkhan in the popular show, passed away on Saturday morning.

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has landed into legal trouble over his latest photoshoot, wherein the 'Bajirao Mastani' actor was seen baring it all in front of the camera, leaving nothing to the imagination. Ranveer struck several poses in a black underwear while in some of the pictures, he went all monty, flaunting his birthday suit. Olympic champion and world championship silver medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games, which begin in Birmingham on Thursday. Chopra, the defending CWG champion, had injured his groin during the World Championship final in Eugene, USA, on Saturday. He underwent a MRI scan the following day and was later advised one-month rest by the doctors, according to Rajeev Mehta, the secretary-general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
At 18 years and 280 days, France opener Gustav McKeon became the first teenager to score a T20I century in men’s cricket. Mckeon smoked a 61-ball 109 against Switzerland in Vantaa. His knock was studded with five fours and nine sixes. It was only the second international match for the youngster. He had scored 76 off 54 balls on his debut against the Czech Republic on Sunday.
Days ahead of the Birmingham Commonwealth games opening, Tokyo Olympics bronze winning boxer locking Borgohain on Monday said she was facing 'mental harassment' over removal of her coaches from the CWG contingent. Lovlina, who will be competing in the 70kg category, took to twitter to vent her frustration, complaining that her training had been hampered since one of her personal coaches was sent back to India while her other coach, Sandhya Gurung, hadn't been able to enter the athlete’s village in Birmingham.
