INTERNATIONAL NEWS 

  • Former Pakistan prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party (PTI) chief Imran Khan was on Monday granted protective bail till August 25 by Islamabad High Court. Islamabad High Court directed Imran Khan to refer to the Anti-Terror Court (ATC) before August 25.
    This comes after the ousted prime minister moved the Islamabad HC on Monday seeking pre-arrest bail. The plea came the day after he was booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act for threatening police, judiciary, and other state institutions at his Islamabad rally on Saturday.
  • After a hiatus of five years, allies USA and South Korea have begun their annual joint military drills, named Ulchi Freedom Shield in the region, much to the irritation of 'notorious' neighbour North Korea.
    The military drill started on Monday (August 22) and is expected to carry on till September 1. The drill will see both sides carry out field exercises involving tens of thousands of troops, tanks, aircraft and warships.
  • The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) on Monday informed that its officers had detained a suicide bomber, a member of the Islamic State terrorist group. He was plotting a terrorist attack against one of India's leadership elite, Russian news agency Sputnik reported FSB as stating.
  • Japan is considering the deployment of 1,000 long-range cruise missiles to boost its counterattack capability against China, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday. The missiles would be existing arms modified to extend their range from 100 km (62 miles) to 1,000 km, the daily said, citing government sources.

 

NATIONAL NEWS 

  • A special court here on Monday extended the judicial custody of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut till September 5 in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of a Mumbai 'chawl'.
  • The Delhi Police has made tight security arrangements at the Delhi borders as farmers staged a protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday to press for their demands on MSP as well as agitate against unemployment.
    Delhi Police detained the farmers who were protesting at Ghazipur near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.
  • K Kavitha, Member of Parliament and daughter of Telangana's Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao lashed out at the BJP on Monday after the national party dragged the minister and his family into the ongoing row over the Delhi liquor policy.  BJP MP Parvesh Verma claimed that KCR's family members attended meetings on the policy's formulation at a five-star hotel in the national capital. The BJP leader claimed that Telangana has a "similar" excise policy and it has been implemented in West Bengal too.
  • Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray will launch a statewide Maha Prabodhan Yatra from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's home turf and stronghold Thane. Uddhav Thackeray will address the first public rally at Thane's Tembhi Naka. Uddhav Thackeray has already announced plans to rejuvenate and revive the party organisation with the active participation of youths and old guards. He will address the first rally at Tembhi Naka from where Anand Dighe, mentor of Eknath Shinde, worked for Shiv Sena’s growth.
  • The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the Gujarat government on a plea by Mumbai-based activist Teesta Setalvad seeking bail in a case of conspiracy and fabrication of evidence allegedly to frame high state functionaries over the 2002 Gujarat riots.

 

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS 

  • Actor Johnny Depp will reportedly be making a surprise appearance at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards next weekend. As per TMZ, Depp has been in talks with the show`s production team to dress up as the network`s Moonman mascot.
  • There is a war brewing between Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut and India's prominent film magazine Filmfare. On Sunday, Kangana announced she will sue the leading magazine for nominating and inviting her to their upcoming film awards show. In response, the magazine has decided to revoke her nomination for Best Actress category. 
  • Hollywood star Millie Bobby Brown is returning to Netflix with 'Enola Holmes 2' which will be released on November 4th. According to variety, 'The stranger things' star will not be fighting demogorgons, but rather solving a mystery.

 

SPORTS NEWS

  • Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen continued his impressive run, trouncing Danish Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus in straight games to progress to the men’s singles second round at BWF World Championships in Tokyo on Monday.
  • The Supreme Court on Monday repealed the three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) it had appointed in May to look after the daily affairs of the All India Football Federation, thus meeting the key criteria set by FIFA to lift the suspension imposed on the country for violating its rules.
  • For the third time-17-year-old Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen, with the latest victory coming on Monday at the FTX Crypto Cup, the American finale of Champions Chess Tour, in Miami.
