Morgan previously led the England team in the ICC Champions trophy where the hosts put up a great show in the group stages staying undefeated before being knocked out by the eventual champions Pakistan in the semi-final.

Earlier it was Dawid Malan who was scheduled to take over the captaincy for the latter stages of the campaign however with the 29 year old being called on for the England Test team, Morgan will lead the side until Dawid is next available off his international commitments.
