Odisha: Groom And Baraat Walk 28 Km To Reach Wedding Venue Due To Drivers' Strike

On Thursday, they trekked all night from Sunakhandi panchayat in Kalyansinghpur block to Dibalapadu village, where they married on Friday.

In wake of the drivers' strike, a groom and his family members had to trek 28 kilometres to the bride's hometown in Odisha's Rayagada district for the wedding, news agency PTI reported.

On Thursday, they trekked all night from Sunakhandi panchayat in Kalyansinghpur block to Dibalapadu village, where they married on Friday.

On social media, a video of the groom and his family members, including a few ladies, walking at night went viral.

"No transport was available due to the drivers' strike. We walked all night to reach the village. We had no other option," one of the family members of groom was quoted by PTI in its report.

The wedding took place on Friday morning. Yet the groom and his family lingered at the bride's house, waiting for the drivers' union to call off the strike so they could return home.

On Wednesday, the Driver Ekta Mahasangh began an indefinite strike across the state, seeking social welfare measures such as insurance, pensions, the formation of a welfare board, and others.

The strike by commercial truck drivers in Odisha was called off on Friday after the state administration promised that all of their demands would be met.

The declaration by the Drivers' Ekta Mahasangh came only hours after Chief Secretary P K Jena and DGP S K Bansak urged the striking truckers to call it a day.

The walkout by over two lakh truckers has disrupted daily life, with everyone including office workers and tourists remaining in place in various locations. This has also resulted in an increase in the price of necessary items.
