Chile: Man Accidentally Receives 286 Times His Salary, Resigns And Disappears

A man working at one of the largest cold cuts companies in Chile received 286 times his salary. He had promised to return the excess amount, but resigned and disappeared, instead.

A Chilean man who accidentally received 286 times his monthly salary in May has sent his resignation to the company and disappeared, reportedly after promising to return the money paid in excess. The company accidentally paid the employee 165,398,851 Chilean pesos (around Rs 1.42 crore), instead of his salary of 500,000 pesos (Rs 43,000), local media reported.

The man worked at Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos (Cial), one of the largest producers of cold cuts in Chile. According to a report in Chilean newspaper Diario Financiero, he had contacted a deputy manager in the human resource department of the company to report the error in payment. When the management checked their records, they realised they had paid him 286 times his salary. The employee was then asked to return the money paid in excess.

According to the report, which was later picked by many media outlets, the employee had agreed to return the amount but did not. When the company tried to reach him, they realised he had disappeared. Reports said the man reached out days later to say he would visit the bank soon to return the money.

However, on June 2, he sent his resignation. The company has registered a complaint against the employee and approached several agencies to retrieve the money.
