'Manipur Needs A Healing Touch': Rahul Gandhi To Visit Violence-Hit State This Week

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal took to Twitter to make the announcement.

New Delhi: Amid ongoing ethnic rioting in Manipur, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit the violence-hit state on June 29-30. During his visit, he will visit relief camps and interact with civil society representatives in Imphal and Churachandpur.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal took to Twitter to make the announcement.

"Manipur has been burning for nearly two months, and desperately needs a healing touch so that the society can move from conflict to peace. This is a humanitarian tragedy and it is our responsibility to be a force of love, not hate," Venugopal wrote.
Around 50,000 people are now staying in over 300 relief camps across the state since the violence started early last month.

Notably, Chief Minister N Biren Singh today announced that his government will provide a one-time assistance of Rs 1000 to those living in relief camps.

While speaking to reporters at a relief camp in the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal East district, Singh said that this financial assistance will be given so that the inmates can buy clothing and personal belongings.

"The government has decided to give Rs 1000 to those staying in the relief camps. The financial assistance will be given through the respective district authorities," the chief minister said at the relief camp, where 106 women and children are staying.

Over 100 people have died in the ethnic violence that has gripped the state of Manipur. The clash between Meitei and Kuki communities first broke out on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
