Assam DSP Arrested For Alleged Sexual Harassment On Minor Domestic Help

DSP Kiran Nath was posted at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon town of the state’s Golaghat district.

Guwahati: An Assam Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has been arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually harassing a minor domestic help for over a period of two months.

The DSP, Kiran Nath, was posted at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon town of the state’s Golaghat district.

The family members of the 15-year-old girl lodged a complaint at the Dergaon police station on Saturday night stating that she had been sexually harassed by DSP Nath.

In the complaint, it is also alleged that the minor girl had been subjected to sexual harassment by Nath for prolonged time. It further claimed that Nath took the minor girl in his car on Friday evening and tried to sexually abuse her.

The entire incident came to light only after the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother and the neighbours. Based on the complaint, the Dergaon police picked up Nath on Sunday noon. The police, after recording the statement of the girl, found that Nath was involved in the heinous crime.

“We have recorded the statement of the victim under section 164 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in front of the Judicial Magistrate. From the prima facie evidence, we have found Nath to be involved under the POCSO Act for which we have arrested him. The crime had been committed since January this year. We have sent the accused for a medical examination and he will be produced before a court,” Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh said.

Taking to microblogging site X, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh wrote, “Reference allegations of sexual misconduct towards the housemaid by a DSP posted at LBPA Dergaon - Case No 42 under section 376,506 of IPC and Section 6 of POCSO Act has been registered at Dergaon PS, District Golaghat. DSP Kiran Nath, presently posted at @LBPA_Assam has been arrested on the basis of evidence that has come up during investigation of the aforementioned criminal case. Zero tolerance towards sexual misconduct amongst police personnel remains a cornerstone of the policy of @assampolice Hq."

In another post on X, the top cop reiterated that the commitment of Assam police towards “Izzat of Khaki,” No policemen found indulging in acts of sexual misconduct or moral turpitude shall be spared.
