Some People Attacking Us Out Of Greed For Land: Assam CM Himanta On Arunachal Border Firing
Following the incident, locals claimed that miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh were involved because there was a dispute over the inter-state boundary in the area.
Hours after two people were killed and two others were injured when a group of unidentified men opened fire in the Panbari area of Dhemaji district, which borders Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that neighbouring states do not attack each other, but some people attack others out of "land greed". The chief minister stated that the police will conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.
The Assam CM said: "Boundaries are yet to be demarcated. Our neighbouring states don't attack us, some people do this in the greed of land. Police will investigate it and will take appropriate action. The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of the district will investigate the matter," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
He also stated that seven villagers had gone to make arrangements for the plantation drive in the morning. They were, however, targeted. He added that one person died on the spot and three others were injured by bullets. Locals rushed them to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital. One of these three died on the spot. Bhuyan claimed that three others had gone missing and that police were looking for them.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that a case has been registered under sections of the IPC at Gogamukh police station. "A bilateral meeting between the DC and SP of Dhemaji and the Lower Siang district of Arunachal was also held at Gogamukh PS. The Arunachal government has committed to cooperating in the investigation and prosecution of the miscreants," he was quoted as saying by ANI.
Earlier in the day, two people were killed and two others were injured when a group of unidentified men opened fire in Assam's Dhemaji district's Panbari area, news agency PTI reported.
According to police, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon near one of the unresolved sections of the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Reports citing Dhemaji Superintendent of Police (SP) Ranjan Bhuyan said that the victims were among those who went to a location along the inter-state boundary to make arrangements for a plantation drive to commemorate World Environment Day when they were attacked.
Boga Chutia and Monitu Gogoi were identified as the two men who died. Puspa Gogoi and Akoni Gohain, the two injured people, have been admitted to the hospital and are being treated, as per the report. Police said Boga Chutia was from Borbila Chutiakari village, while the other three were from Milonpur village in the district.
