Manipur CM N Biren Singh To Hold Review Meet After 1 Soldier Injured In Unprovoked Firing In Imphal West

One army soldier was injured in unprovoked firing in Manipur on the intervening night of June 18-19, said Indian Army.

One Army soldier sustained a gunshot wound after armed miscreants resorted to unprovoked firing from Kanto Sabal towards Chingmang village in Manipur during the intervening night of June 18-19, Spear Corps of the Indian Army said in a statement. The armed force further said that army columns resorted to controlled retaliatory fire keeping in view the presence of villagers in the area in which one soldier was injured. He was evacuated and sent to Military Hospital. The injured soldier is stable, the army said.

"Armed miscreants resorted to unprovoked firing from Kanto Sabal towards Chingmang village during night of 18/19 June. Army Columns resorted to controlled retaliatory fire keeping in view presence of villagers in the area. One Army Soldier sustained Gun Shot Wound, evacuated to Military Hospital Leimakhong and is stable. Additional columns inducted in the area & joint operations are in progress," the Army said in a tweet on Monday.

Reacting to the incident, Manipur CM N Biren Singh said that he will hold a review meeting of the security situation to ascertain how it happened and to avert anything like that.

"These types of things have to be stopped immediately," Singh said.


This comes a day after Indian Army conducted a flag march in a violence-affected area in Imphal Valley. Authorities also decided to relax the curfew on Sunday from 5 am to 5 pm. 

The District Magistrate of Imphal East, Khumanthem Diana Devi issued a circular in which she specified the areas where the curfew will be relaxed In order for the general public of Imphal East district to be able to purchase essential items such as food and medicines. Curfew has been imposed in Manipur under section 144 following the clashes that broke out between two communities Kuki and Meitei on May 3.

"Total public curfew under Section 144 CrPC, 1973 prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences imposed in Imphal East District vide this Office Order dated 3rd May 2023 is hereby relaxed from 5 AM to 5 PM on 18th June 2023 except for the area for which the schedule is given below in order to facilitate the general public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies," the circular issued by the DM read, as quoted by ANI.

A series of violent episodes followed it and it has claimed over a hundred lives till now. Thousands have been displaced from their homes.

The Manipur government extended the shutdown of internet services till June 20 amid violence. Miscreants tried burning down the official residence of Manipur Minister Nemcha Kipgen in Imphal West. His house got partially burnt in that attack. 

Meanwhile, Congress, along with 10 other like-minded parties from Manipur, questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the violence in the northeastern state on Saturday and said they were waiting for an opportunity to speak with him in-depth about it, news agency IANS reported. Speaking with media at the party headquarters, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said: "Ten opposition parties from Manipur are waiting for the appointment from the Prime Minister. Ten parties, Congress, JD(U), CPI, CPI(M), Trinamool Congress, AAP, All India Forward Bloc, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP and Revolutionary Socialist Party have sought an appointment with the Prime Minister. They are awaiting a reply. We are hopeful that before leaving for the US on June 20, he will meet the opposition parties."
