Syria Earthquake: Indian Army Deployed In UNDOF Delivers Ration, Medicine, Other Relief Materials To Aleppo

Indian Army delivered relief materials pooled from the government of India and the international community to Aleppo, Syria.

New Delhi: In its continuing attempt to provide humanitarian aid to the earthquake hit Syria, Indian Army on Wednesday delivered relief materials including ration and medical supplies to Aleppo. It took to Twitter and said that the Indian Army team deployed in United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) delivered relief material to Aleppo, Syria.

"This included rations & medicines from the Government of India as well as contributions from the international community," the Army said in the tweet.

The step was taken after a request was received from the government of Syria to the UN for assistance in earthquake relief, reported ANI citing sources. It added that the proposal for Indian Army personnel stationed in UNDOF to provide direct assistance was agreed upon by the government of India.

Sources told ANI that it was decided that an Indian Army team of around 40 personnel based at UNDOF will be undertaking multiple trips to Aleppo to transport relief materials comprising ration, medical supplies, clothing and other aid to Syria sent by the government of India, UNDOF and the international community.

The report added that on Wednesday, the first convoy transported relief materials, pooled from the government of India and the international community, consisting of rations, and medicines to Aleppo in Syria.

The relief material has been handed over to representatives of the local administration in Aleppo, ANI quoted sources as saying.

Earlier on Saturday, a consignment of relief supplies and equipment was sent to Turkiye and Syria aboard an IAF C-17 aircraft under India's 'Operation Dost'.

External affairs minister (EAM) S Jaishankar took to Twitter and informed, "The 7th #OperationDost flight departs for Syria and Türkiye. Flight is carrying relief material, medical aid, emergency & critical care medicines, medical equipment & consumables."

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the flight will fly to Damascus and then to Adana in Turkiye after dropping off relief supplies.

"The flight is carrying over 35 tonnes of humanitarian items, with over 23 tonnes headed for Syrian relief efforts and about 12 tonnes bound for Turkey," the MEA said.
