Washington: On Friday, a vehicle rammed through security and crashed into a barrier at the Washington complex killing a US Capitol police officer and injuring another. The shocking incident led to the area being put under lockdown.

According to a report by AFP, Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman told media persons that Capitol Police shot dead the driver after he jumped out of the car and lunged at them with a knife.

After alerts went out over the incident, National Guard troops were mobilized and Capitol complex staff was ordered to stay away from windows.

The visuals available of the incident showed a blue sedan that had crashed into a security barrier on one of the paths leading to Congress. Injured officers were apparently loaded into ambulances.

Suspect Identified

US media also reported that the attacker was identified as Noah Green, a 25-year-old Black man from Indiana and a follower of the black nationalist Nation of Islam movement.

While his motivation behind the attack was yet to clear, Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee hinted that a terror link was not being suspected at this point.

Meanwhile, Noah Green's social media posts have come to light, which indicate his despair and paranoia. According to them, he was unemployed and had health problems. He also referred to biblical concepts of the end of times.

He claimed in a post that he was being tormented by the FBI and CIA, hospitalized and subjected to "mind control," and called the government "the #1 enemy of Black people!"

As per his posts, he was a follower of Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam who also promotes Black nationalist, anti-white and anti-Semitic thinking.

President Joe Biden Sends Condolences

President Joe Biden has offered his "heartfelt condolences" to the family of William Evans, the policeman who was killed in the attack.

"Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the US Capitol grounds, which killed Officer William Evans of the US Capitol Police, and left a fellow officer fighting for his life," Biden wrote in a statement.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans' family, and everyone grieving his loss," he added.
