Quad Summit: PM Modi Arrives In Tokyo, To Meet Japanese Business Leaders Today

PM Modi In Tokyo: Ahead of his visit to Japan, PM Modi said that the Summit will provide an opportunity for the leaders of the four Quad countries to review the progress of their initiatives.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning (local time) arrived in Tokyo to participate in the Quad summit on May 24 at the invitation of the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The Summit in Tokyo is the fourth interaction of Quad Leaders since their first virtual meeting in March 2021, in-person Summit in Washington D.C. in September 2021, and virtual meeting in March 2022. The leaders will review the progress of Quad initiatives and Working Groups, identify new areas of cooperation and provide strategic guidance and vision for future collaboration. 

After landing in Tokyo, the Prime Minister tweeted, "Landed in Tokyo. Will be taking part in various programmes during this visit including the Quad Summit, meeting fellow Quad leaders, interacting with Japanese business leaders and the vibrant Indian diaspora."

PM Narendra Modi received a warm welcome on Monday from the Indian diaspora at the Hotel New Otani where he will be staying during his trip.

PM Modi To Meet Japanese Business Leaders Ahead Of Bilateral Talks With Biden

Ahead of his visit to Japan, PM Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the Summit will provide an opportunity for the leaders of the four Quad countries to review the progress of their initiatives. "We will also exchange views about developments in the Indo-Pacific region and global issues of mutual interest," his statement read.

The Prime Minister on Monday will be meeting with Nobuhiro Endo, Chairman of NEC Corporation, Tadashi Yanai, President, and CEO of UNIQLO, Osamu Suzuki, Adviser of Suzuki Motor Corporation and Masayoshi Son, Board Director at Softbank Group Corporation, news agency ANI reported.

On Tuesday, PM Modi will have a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden. The talk will include a "constructive and straightforward" dialogue along with a continued discussion on the Ukraine situation.

"I will hold a bilateral meeting with President Joseph Biden, where we will discuss further consolidation of our multi-faceted bilateral relations with the USA. We will also continue our dialogue on regional developments and contemporary global issues," the Prime Minister had mentioned.

He said that he was looking forward to a bilateral meeting with newly-elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who will be joining the Quad Leaders’ Summit for the first time. At the meeting, "the multifaceted cooperation between India and Australia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and regional and global issues of mutual interest will be discussed."
