PM Modi At COP26 Event: Need To Make Adaptation ‘Main Part Of Our Development Policies’

Ahead of his speech, PM Modi took to Twitter and wrote: "The COP26 Summit offers a wonderful opportunity to interact with various world leaders".

New Delhi: Addressing the COP26 side event on ‘Action and Solidarity - The Critical Decade’ convened by UK PM Boris Johnson, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the world has to make adaptation the main part of our development policies and schemes. 

Laying out India's achievements in the sector, the Prime Minister said: "We have to make adaptation the main part of our development policies and schemes. In India, schemes like 'Nal Se Jal', Clean India Mission, and Ujjawala have not only given adoption benefits to our citizens but also improved their quality of life"

"Many traditional communities have knowledge of living in harmony with nature. To make sure that this knowledge flows to the next generations, it should be added to the schools' syllabus. Protection of lifestyle suitable to local conditions can also be an important part of adoption": PM Modi added, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Ministry of External Affairs informed that the leaders discussed the three pillars of adaptation, finance and mitigation.

Earlier in the day, PM Narendra Modi met Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, on the sidelines of the COP26 World Leaders Summit in Glasgow.

Prime Minister congratulated PM Johnson for successfully organising the COP26 and for his personal leadership in championing global action for climate change mitigation and adaptation, the Ministry of External Affairs informed in a statement

"He reiterated India's commitment to closely work with the UK on climate finance, technology, innovation and adaptation green hydrogen, renewables and clean technologies including joint initiatives under ISA and CDRI," the ministry stated.

The Prime Ministers reviewed the implementation of the Roadmap 2030 priorities particularly in the trade and economy, people-to-people, health, defence and security areas. They expressed satisfaction at the progress in delivering the Enhanced Trade Partnership including steps taken towards the launch of FTA negotiations.

Both leaders also discussed regional and global challenges including Afghanistan, Counter-Terrorism, Indo-Pacific, supply chain resilience and post-Covid global economic recovery.

PM Modi reiterated his desire to welcome PM Johnson in India soon.

COP26, running from October 31 to November 12 in Glasgow is regarded as the biggest climate conference since the 2015 Paris summit. The world leaders attending the climate summit have a crucial task in setting worldwide emission targets to slow global warming, as well as firming up other key commitments.

At the end of day one of the World Leaders' Summit on Monday, PM Modi will join more than 120 Heads of Government and Heads of State at a special VVIP reception at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum one of Scotland's most popular visitor attractions.
