Tsunami Warning As Powerful 7.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mindanao In Philippines

An earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.5, rocked Mindanao in the Philippines on Saturday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The seismic event occurred at 10:37 p.m. and was measured at a moderate depth of 32 kilometers (20 miles), the EMSC reported, as per news agency Reuters. The United States tsunami warning system swiftly issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake, news agency Reuters reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, assessing the magnitude and location of the quake, reported the possibility of tsunami waves impacting several regions, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia, news agency AP reported.
The Philippine Seismology Agency PHIVOLCS has warned that tsunami waves could hit the Philippines by midnight local time (1600 GMT) and could continue for hours, as per Reuters. Additionally, the Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that tsunami waves of up to a metre (3 feet) high were expected to reach Japan's western coast by 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (1630 GMT on Saturday).

Last month, on November 17, the southern Philippines experienced a magnitude 6.7 offshore earthquake that resulted in tragic consequences. Eight people lost their lives in the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Davao Occidental. Additionally, 13 individuals sustained injuries in the tremor, causing panic among residents and damaging over 50 houses and various other structures.
Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the Philippines, located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," identified by the U.S. Geological Survey as the "most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world."
