Operation Ganga | IAF Flight Returns With 210 Ukraine-Evacuated Indian Nationals From Romania

For more than 10 days, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been going on that has left many Indian nationals, mostly students, stranded in the east European country.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force flight carrying 210 Indian nationals evacuated from crisis-hit Ukraine arrived at the Hindon Airbase near Delhi this morning. The flight arrived from Ukraine’s neighbouring country Romania.

For more than 10 days, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been going on that has left many Indian nationals, mostly students, stranded in the east European country.

In order to rescue these students, the Indian government started Operation Ganga which pulled in Indian Air Force as well this week. The IAF has deployed C-17 aircraft in the evacuation missions that are also carrying relief material to Ukraine which is suffering from a shortage of food, fuel, and medical aid.

Thousands of Indian nationals have been evacuated from the crisis-torn country till now, and many are still waiting for aid.

Currently, the evacuation missions are being conducted from Ukraine’s neighbouring countries on western sides, are Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova.

For the same, the central government has also sent its special envoys to these countries to oversee the evacuation of Indian nationals safely and speedily.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has been sent to Romania, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to Slovakia, Hardeep Singh Puri to Hungary, and VK Singh to Poland.

Meanwhile, the Indian government also requested Russia to arrange a safe passage for Indian nationals through the Russian border this week. On Saturday, Russia announced that it was opting for a temporary ceasefire in order to provide a humanitarian corridor for those who want to leave the country. After a few hours, the assault began again on late Saturday night.
