Curfew Imposed In Nepal's Birgunj After Clash Between 2 Groups During Immersion Of Saraswati Idol

Nepal News: A curfew was imposed in the Birgunj area following heightened tensions that stemmed from a clash between groups during the immersion of a Saraswati idol.

The district administration office in Nepal's Parsa imposed an indefinite curfew in the Birgunj area following heightened tensions in the city over protests related to an incident in Rautahat district. The tension stemmed from a clash between groups during the immersion of a Saraswati idol, leading to unrest in the region. According to news agency ANI, the curfew was enforced until further notice after a Hindu group protested against alleged hindrances encountered during the immersion of a Saraswati idol in Rautahat District.

The situation remained tense, prompting authorities to take preventive measures.

The Kathmandu Post reported that demonstrations erupted in Birgunj following a clash between two groups in Ishnath Municipality-7 of Rautahat district. The Rautahat District Administration Office had previously imposed an indefinite curfew after the clash during the idol immersion.

In response to the escalating tensions, an indefinite curfew was imposed in Birgunj from 5 p.m. on Monday. Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal issued the curfew order under Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act, 1971, The Kathmandu Post's report mentioned. The affected area encompasses Nagawa Chowk in the east, Tilawe bridge in the west, Parwanipur in the north, and Miteripul in the south of the metropolitan city, it added.

"No one will be allowed to hold gatherings, meetings, processions, rallies, and walk on the road during the period," stated the notice issued by the authorities, as quoted by the report which further stated that a heavy police deployment was observed to prevent any potential clashes or untoward incidents.
