Nepal Gets New PM! Sher Bahadur Deuba Sworn-In As Prime Minister For Fifth Time

This is the fifth time that Deuba (74) has returned to power as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Tuesday.

According to a report in ‘The Himalayan Times’, President Vidya Devi Bhandari earlier appointed Deuba as the Prime Minister under Article 76(5) of the Constitution.

This is the fifth time that Deuba (74) has returned to power as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

His appointment is in line with the Supreme Court's decision on Monday which had stamped his claim for the Prime Minister’s post, removing KP Sharma Oli.

Deuba was informed about his appointment by the President's Office, the report said.

Prior to this, Deuba has been the Prime Minister four times –  September 1995 – March 1997, July 2001 – October 2002, June 2004 – February 2005 and June 2017 – February 2018.

Deuba will have to seek a vote of confidence in the House within 30 days of his appointment as the Prime Minister under the constitutional provision.

The Supreme Court on Monday quashed Oli’s May 21 decision to dissolve the House of Representatives and ordered Deuba’s appointment as the Prime Minister. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana had said that Oli's claim to the Prime Minister’s post was unconstitutional.
