Hussain Shameem, Maldives Prosecutor General Appointed By Solih Government, Stabbed: Report

Maldives' Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has been brutally stabbed by unidentified miscreants.

Maldives' Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has been brutally stabbed by unidentified miscreants. He was assaulted on a street in Male City. Shameem was appointed during the tenure of the previous Maldivian Democratic Party government headed by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The MDP has initiated impeachment proceedings against the incumbent President Mohamed Muizzu.

Following the incident, former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed's party the Democrats said that Shameem was brutally attacked today with a machete in broad daylight.

"Maldives Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, brutally attacked today with a machete in broad daylight. Since the attack took place on the street, it is considered to be pre-mediated and well-planned. Such an attack on a person holding a highly constitutionally appointed position in the state to avoid politics and perform important duties within the criminal justice system is an attack on the entire system. It's a dangerous signal. The incident is being investigated by the Maldives Police," the Democrats said.

The opposing party alleges that President Muizzu has adopted a pro-China position, especially following the contentious controversial docking of a Chinese spy ship in Male. A parliamentary dispute ensued, leading to the decision to commence impeachment proceedings.

The latest incident comes amid growing incidents of violence in the country. Recently, the Maldives Parliament witnessed violence when government MPs (PPM/PNC party) disturbed the proceedings of Parliament and the Speakers, ANI reported, citing Adhahdhu.

A key vote on parliamentary approval for the Muizzu government was scheduled to take place on the day. Recently, two opposition parties in the Maldives came out against the current regime over its 'stark' anti-India pivot. In a joint statement issued by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Democrats, they labelled the shift in foreign policy as 'extremely detrimental' to the country's long-term development.

The statement served to reassert and affirm the opposition's belief that "alienating any development partner, and especially the country's most long-standing ally, will be extremely detrimental to the long-term development of the country," as reported by ANI.

The opposition further underscored that "stability and security in the Indian Ocean are vital to the stability and security of the Maldives."
