A parliamentary petition urging the Canadian government to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship has garnered more than 150,000 signatures, driven by concerns over his close association with US President Donald Trump. The petition, launched by British Columbia-based author Qualia Reed, argues that Musk’s alignment with Trump poses a threat to Canada’s national interests.

The petition, which has received sponsorship from New Democratic Party MP Charlie Angus, claims Musk has actively worked to downsize the US federal government under Trump’s directive. Trump, who returned to the White House for a second term on January 20, has made repeated remarks about annexing Canada, describing it as the “51st state.” His rhetoric has alarmed many Canadians, especially in light of his calls for heavy tariffs on Canadian imports and his dismissive attitude toward the country’s sovereignty.

'Against The Interest Of Canada'

“Elon Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” the petition asserts, further stating that his close ties to Trump effectively make him “a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.” Reed and the petition’s signatories are urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strip Musk of his citizenship and passport immediately.

Despite being the head of major US corporations, including Tesla and SpaceX, the petition argues that his role as an advisor to Trump makes him complicit in efforts that undermine Canada’s independence.

Trump Downplays Canada's Autonomy

Trump has frequently downplayed Canada’s autonomy, even referring to Trudeau as a mere “governor,” a title used for US state leaders. Musk himself has made social media posts praising Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, following Trudeau’s announcement in January that he would step down as Liberal Party leader once a successor is chosen.

According to Canada’s parliamentary process, petitions must gather at least 500 signatures to be considered for presentation to the House of Commons and potentially elicit a formal government response. Reed’s petition has far surpassed this requirement, reaching approximately 157,000 signatures as of late Sunday, with the number continuing to rise.

Parliament is set to reconvene on March 24, though the possibility of a general election could alter the legislative schedule. The petition’s signing period remains open until June 20, leaving room for even more public engagement.
