Earthquake with magnitude 6.2 jolts eastern part of Asian Games' host Indonesia
The country is hosting the 18th Asian Games (from August 18 to September 2, 2018) in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang.
New Delhi: Indonesia was today struck by a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 on Tuesday.
As per the US Geological Survey, there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage.
As per the USGS the offshore tremor that struck at a shallow depth of eight kilometres, about 100 kilometres southeast of Kupang on the Indonesian portion of Timor Island.
The quake shook the eastern part of the country which is hosting the 18th Asian Games in cities of Jakarta and Palembang. Indonesia had undergone a series of deadly earthquakes earlier this year that had killed around 500 people as per reports. The country is called one of the most disaster-prone nations. A 9.3 magnitude undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western parts, had jolted the country in the 2004.
