An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck Java, Indonesia, earlier this month on June 7, according to EMSC. The agency had previously estimated the earthquake to be 6.2.

Earthquakes are common in Indonesia because it is located in a seismically active region. The country is located on the Ring of Fire, which encircles the Pacific Ocean and is characterised by intense volcanic and seismic activity. Earthquakes in Indonesia can be of varying magnitudes, causing significant damage and loss of life.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Turkish-Syrian border on February 6, killing thousands of people in both countries. The earthquake was followed by aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.6.

The following precautions should be taken in the case of an earthquake, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a US government agency:

  • Drop, cover, and hold on: This is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself during an earthquake. Drop to the ground, get under a sturdy table or desk, and cover your head and neck with your arms. If there is no furniture nearby, crouch in an interior hallway or against an inside wall. Stay away from windows, exterior walls, and anything that could fall, such as light fixtures, appliances, or furniture.
  • If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Stay in your car until the shaking stops. Do not get under an overpass or near power lines.
  • If you are outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, power lines, and other hazards. Stay away from areas that could be affected by landslides or mudslides.
  • If you are in a crowded place, such as a stadium or concert hall, stay calm and follow the instructions of the officials. Do not try to run or push your way out of the building.
  • After the earthquake, check for injuries and damage. If you are trapped, do not move around. Use a whistle or other noisemaker to signal for help.
