China's Guangzhou Under Partial Lockdown After Surge Of Covid Variant Found In India Reported
China’s southern metropolis of Guangzhou ordered residents in one of its neighborhoods to stay home to contain Covid outbreak from becoming more widespread.
Guangzhou: After controlling the spread of Coronavirus, China is again witnessing a surge in Coronavirus cases which has led to a lockdown in a neighbourhood of the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
The Chinese government has asked the citizens to undergo door to door Covid testing and to remain indoors till the spread of the virus is under control.
According to a report by Bloomberg Quint, there are five confirmed Covid cases and 21 asymptomatic infections in the outbreak between May 21 and as of 2 p.m. Sunday, and all are of the variant, China Central Television reported, citing the vice head of the city’s health commission.
Following the outbreak, markets, schools and entertainment venues in the area were shut.
The city government has rushed to conduct mass testing considering the first outbreak in China which created havoc in the city.
Households in Liwan districts have been barred from going outside except for some family members to buy essentials and groceries.
Guangzhou, a business and industrial center of 15 million people north of Hong Kong, has reported 20 new infections over the past week. The number is small compared with India’s thousands of daily cases but alarmed Chinese authorities who believed they had the disease under control, according to a report by AP.
The spread of infections was fast and strong, the official Global Times newspaper cited health authorities as saying.
Most of the latest infections in Guangzhou are believed to be linked to a 75-year-old woman who was found May 21 to have the variant first identified in India, state media say. Most of the others attended a dinner with her or live together, as quoted by the local media.
