Bangladesh Crisis Enters US As Protesters Storm Consulate In New York, Tear Down Mujibur Portrait: VIDEO

Bangladeshi protesters in the US stormed the nation's consulate in New York, demanding the removal of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait. The incident came after the release of Khaleda Zia from jail.

Bangladesh Crisis: The Bangladesh protests on Tuesday reached the United States of America with anti-Sheikh Hasina government protesters barging into the Bangladesh consulate in New York. The protesters also took down a portrait of 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a former President of Bangladesh and the father of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A video of the incident showed an angry mob entering the chamber of Mohammad Najmul Huda, Bangladesh's Consul General, and demanding that the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman be taken down. The video is now viral.

Consulate officials were seen trying to prevent the mob, clad in the green and red colours of former PM Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh National Party (also the colours of the national flag), but were unsuccessful. The protesters could be heard saying in Bangla, "No photo [of Mujibur Rahman] can be allowed here." Facing the angry protesters, the consulate employees took down Mujibur Rahman's photos in the office but prevented the mob from snatching them. The protesters, too, took down his pictures.

The mob also forced the officials to take down what looked like a memento which had a boat as a showpiece. The angry protesters were seen repeatedly shouting at the employees, "Nouka namaan [take down the boat]." The boat is the election symbol of Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh Awami League.

The storming of the Bangladesh Consulate in the US came on a day BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was released from jail, where she was serving a 17-year sentence over corruption cases.
