55 Killed, 17 Missing After Israeli Strike Hits Building For Displaced Palestinians

The initial casualty list by the emergency service said that the deceased included a mother and her five children, some of them adults, and a second mother with her six children.

At least 55 Palestinians were killed after an Israeli strike hit a five-storey building in northern Gaza where displaced Palestinian people were seeking shelter on Tuesday. Gaza’s Health Ministry said, that over half of them were women and children.

As many as 17 others missing under the rubble, as per The Guardian.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the Israeli strike hit a building in the northern town of Beit Lahiya, near the Israeli border. Israel’s force made no immediate comment.

As per the report, the initial casualty list by the emergency service said that the deceased included a mother and her five children, some of them adults, and a second mother with her six children.

The director of nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr Hossam Abu Safiya, said the hospital was overwhelmed by the number of injured people.

“The world must take action and not just watch the genocide in the Gaza Strip,” he told Al Jazeera. “We call on the world to send specialised medical delegations to treat dozens of wounded people in the hospital.”

Over the weekend, Israeli forces had raided the medical facility and detained dozens of medics.

In recent months, Israel’s forces have repeatedly hit shelters for displaced people while stating that they made precise strikes targeting Hamas and avoided harming civilians. These strikes have often killed women and children, report AP. The military said it detained a number of Hamas militants in the raid on Kamal Adwan, the latest in a series of raids on hospitals since the start of the war.

On Sunday, Egypt proposed an initial two-day ceasefire in Gaza to exchange four Israeli hostages and for some Palestinian prisoners. Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that efforts to defuse the devastating, more than year-long war resumed in Qatar with the directors of the US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israel's Mossad intelligence agency taking part.
