Pakistan: 18-Yr-Old Hindu Girl Shot Dead After Failed Abduction Attempt

An 18-year-old Hindu girl was reportedly shot dead in Rohi, Sukkur, a city in the Pakistani province of Sindh, during a failed abduction attempt.

New Delhi: An 18-year-old Hindu girl was reportedly shot dead in Rohi, Sukkur, a city in the Pakistani province of Sindh, during a failed abduction attempt. The girl, Pooja Oad, was said to have been shot in the middle of the street after she put up resistance to the attackers, news agency ANI reported, citing Pakistani media.

Quoting Pakistani newspaper The Friday Times, a PTI report said that every year, several women belonging to minority communities, especially Hindus in Sindh, are abducted and forcibly converted by religious extremists.

Citing The Friday Times, the PTI report also said that Pakistan's minority communities have long faced the issue of forced marriages and conversions.

As many as 156 incidents of forced conversions took place between 2013 and 2019, the PTI report said, citing the Pakistani news outlet.

The Sindh government attempted to outlaw forced marriages and conversions for the second time, in 2019, the PTI report said, quoting the Pakistani news outlet. However, certain religious protesters contested the bill. They stated that girls only convert after falling in love with Muslim men.

About 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan, according to official estimates.  The majority of Pakistan's Hindu population, which forms the biggest minority community in the country, is settled in Sindh province.

According to a report published by news agency ANI, multiple rights organisations have accused the Pakistan government of not taking necessary actions over rising crimes against Hindus and other minorities.
