West Bengal: TMC, BJP Trade Barbs After Bombs Hurled At Saffron Rally In Cooch Behar. Two Injured

According to police, the two men, who the BJP said were its members, are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital and the situation was gradually returning to normal.

New Delhi: Two persons were injured after several crude bombs were hurled at a protest rally held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in Coochbehar district in West Bengal on Sunday, news agency ANI reported. According to the report, the incident took place at the Sitalkuchi Bazar triggering panic among the people.

According to reports, the BJP took out a rally demanding the arrest of TMC leaders allegedly involved in various scams in the state.

The BJP alleged that the TMC was behind the attack during its protest rally that witnessed a massive turnout.

“We held a massive protest rally (for arrest of TMC leaders allegedly involved in various scams) in the Sitalkuchi area during which TMC workers started pelting stones and later hurling bombs. As a result, two BJP party workers got injured,” ANI quoted BJP district president Sukumar Roy as saying.

"The incident proves again that 'jungle raj' is prevailing in West Bengal and police are mute spectators," BJP's national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said.

However, refuting the claims, the TMC alleged that the saffron party itself had orchestrated the attack to get public attention.

"We were busy with Abhishek Banerjee's public meeting in Malbazar. Why should we foment trouble in Sitalkuchi?" said TMC's Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha, the minister of North Bengal Development.

According to police, the two men, who the BJP said were its members, are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital and the situation was gradually returning to normal.
